Isis is a major goddess in ancient Egyptian religion whose cult spread throughout the Greco-Roman world. Isis is first mentioned in the Old Kingdom of Egypt (c. 2686–2181 BC) as one of the main characters in the Osiris myth, in which she resurrects her slain divine husband, the king Osiris, and gives birth to and protects his heir, Horus. Isis was believed to guide the dead to the afterlife and aid Osiris, and was considered the divine mother of the pharaoh, who was likened to her son Horus. Her maternal assistance was in the form of healing spells to aid the common people. Isis originally played a minor role in royal hymns and temple rituals, but she was more important in funerary rites and magical texts. She is often represented in art as a human female wearing a throne-like figure on her head. During the New Kingdom, she took on the characteristics of Hathor, the former pre-eminent goddess, as Isis was now represented wearing Hathor's clothing, with the sun disk on her head between the horns of a cow, as Hathor had previously been represented.
